Dar gets Sh85bn assistance to spur regional integration

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania and Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) of which the later committed itself to providing $56 million (over Sh85 billion) to help the country improve regional integration and trade competitiveness between 2011 and 2015.

The support will focus on improving transport and facilitate implementation of the East African Community (EAC) integration initiatives in the country to enhance participation of the private sector in the regional integration processes.

The programme is expected to reduce transport related costs through improvement of infrastructure at the ports and some cross border transits.Speaking after signing the MoU yesterday, the acting permanent secretary in the ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Dr Servacius Likwelile, said the support would be directed to few priority areas identified to be covered in the implementation of the programme.

“The priority areas in this programme include the Dar es Salaam port, establishment of One Stop Border Posts (OSBPs), improving the capacity of the Central Corridor Agency, strengthening the National Monitoring Committees on non tariff barriers (NTBs), operationalising the online NTB monitoring system and facilitate implementation of the EAC common market protocol,” he said.
